She had no wet towel, no mask, no protective gear. What she had was a mother’s body, an internal wiring built entirely around the little ones on the floor above.
She did not stop to calculate the odds, weigh her strength,
or reason through the heat. She charged straight into the inferno. Again and
again she went in, tears streaming and lungs burning, pulling her children out
one by one through the falling embers. The heat was so unbearable that the
soles of her feet blistered and tore on the scorching floorboards, yet she kept
going. By the time she carried out her last child, her youngest baby, severe
burns covered almost every inch of her body.
Then she collapsed on the grass, barely conscious and
fighting for every breath. Her first words were not a cry for help. She looked
up through charred, swollen eyelids and whispered: “Are my children safe?”
She didn’t run into that fire because of a calculated
strategy. She ran in because her whole being was wired to shield the life that
came from her womb. It was deep, involuntary, and primal.
Now hold that
picture close, because it is the key to understanding how God feels about you.
His Mercy
and Lovingkindness
When David cried out in Psalm 25:6, “Remember, O Lord, thy
tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses,” he was tapping into two distinct
realities of God’s nature. Every child of God needs to understand them. The
word mercies in the above scripture is Racham in Hebrew, while 'lovingkindness' is 'chesed'.
1. Chesed:
The Covenant by Which God Binds Himself to be Favourable to You
Chesed is God’s covenant kindness, the legal, ironclad
obligation of love. Because of the New Covenant in the blood of Jesus Christ,
God has bound Himself to His own word. Of His own free will, He entered an
agreement in which He must be favourable to you. He cannot break it, because to
break His covenant would be to deny Himself.
If, within that sacred agreement, you falter, fall, and
require forgiveness, He cannot say no to you. He has bound His own hands to
mercy.
This means nobody can derail your destiny. It doesn’t matter
who dislikes you, who is scheming behind closed doors, or what spiritual
opposition seems stacked against you. By virtue of His chesed, you will
succeed anyway, because the Creator of the universe is legally and divinely
obligated to be for you. Dear minister, you don’t have to live in defensive
fear. You can step out with bold, enthusiastic, unshakeable confidence in His
loyalty.
2. Racham:
The Visceral Fire in His Womb
If chesed is the legal guarantee, Racham is the
tender, burning heart behind it. It comes straight from the Hebrew root word
for womb: the deep-seated compassion a mother feels for the child she carried.
It isn’t a calculated decision. It is a physical, gut-wrenching compulsion.
Think again of that mother walking barefoot through fire to
pull her babies from the flames. Think of the mother in King Solomon’s court (1
Kings 3:16–28) who surrendered her own child to another woman just to keep the
baby alive. Her Racham flared in an instant, and her entire being burned
to protect her offspring.
This is the visceral mercy of your God.
In Isaiah 49:15, He asks you directly:
“Can a woman forget her
sucking child, that she should not have compassion [Racham] on the son of her
womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.”
Before God “reasons” with your situation, His heart has
already responded to your cry. He cannot watch you go under. His Racham
springs into action simply because you belong to Him.
The same love that drove that mother into the flames drives
God to respond to you. You are not an afterthought to Him. You are His own.
New Every
Morning
His mercies are not a finite resource that you drain over
time. They are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23). Even if you didn’t use
up yesterday’s allotment of grace, He pours out a brand-new, overflowing supply
today. You wake up to fresh Chesed and fresh Racham.
Walk boldly at all times, knowing that the visceral, unstoppable, covenant-keeping mercy of God goes before you, and He will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).
