From a scholar who gets an A+ in his academics to an employee who surpasses ordinary standards to deliver superior quality, excellence is certainly an attribute that people really appreciate because it is synonymous with greatness and extreme beauty. It is not a term that is used lightly at all, being ascribed to those who possess the quality of being exceptionally good and surpassing, truly being the best at something. 

It is therefore such a joy to know that in Christ, we have been called to a life of excellence. 1 Peter 2:9 AMPC puts it succinctly: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God’s] own purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

This is the life that the Lord has called us to and we shouldn’t accept anything short of excellence or live like the rest of the world. Daniel in the Bible was described as having an excellent spirit with the ability to explain hard sentences and dissolve doubts (Daniel 5:12). We have the same spirit of excellence in even greater measure because of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit and should therefore not manifest anything less. 

The scripture admonishes us to be renewed in the spirit of our minds and further highlights several things that a Christian must abhor to rightly manifest excellence in life. Several of these things are related to speech, character, and power over negative emotions (Ephesians 4:17-5:8).

Make up your mind to be excellent in character, in knowledge, in speech, in giving, and in ministry. You have been called to a life of excellence, born for excellence and equipped for excellence; therefore, live excellently.
